Making Finances Simple. Changing Lives.
We often receive questions asking us “What is the next money move I should make? Is it to pay off credit card debt? Save for emergencies? Contribute to a 401k? Save for college education?” These are very good questions as none of us learned about personal finances in school. Read below to learn more on this topic and to find out how you can receive your free gift..... The order in which you apply any surplus funds will largely determine the financial success you achieve. For instance, it is not prudent to make extra principal payments on your mortgage before you have fully funded an emergency savings account. You may have good intentions of paying your home off faster, but you are one emergency away from credit card debt. It does no good to hastily pay off a low rate mortgage while simultaneously paying high interest on a credit card. Funding an emergency savings first will provide a buffer for "life events", so you don't encounter major setbacks while attacking your goal of paying off that home quicker. You see, order does matter! This is especially important when you receive “money windfalls”. Money windfalls are any sudden source of money that randomly comes into your life. This is money you can’t count on receiving routinely. It includes things like gifts from family members, work bonuses, inheritances, tax refunds, etc. How you apply money windfalls is critical to your financial success. You don’t suddenly need a new car because grandpa gave you $40,000. We are not saying you shouldn't buy that car, but we are saying to assess your “next money move” carefully. Would you be better off paying down student loans, or buying that new car? We discuss “next money moves” and more with our Personal Finance Coaching program.
