​The IRS has indicated it will end most unannounced visits to taxpayers in order to improve overall safety measures for taxpayers.

In general, the IRS will always contact you by mail first to initiate any inquiries. However, the IRS also occasionally conducted random visits to taxpayers. These visits have sparked anger amongst taxpayers and advocates as well.

Therefore, other than a few unique circumstances, which you’d likely never face, the IRS will no longer be conducting visits without prior notice and consent. Instead, mailings will take priority, along with scheduled meetings as needed.
